At the Dermatology Treatment and Research Center of Dallas, TX, not only do we provide dermatological care, but we also regularly run clinical trials. Clinical trials are part of a process of bringing a new product or medication into the market to obtain FDA approval. Individuals who participate in clinical trials do so to help be a part of improving the field of medicine. They are often individuals who struggle with the treatment of a certain condition and want to be at the forefront of medicine to try the newest treatments available. Many patients who visit our practice are interested in learning more about clinical trials and what to expect.

First and foremost, a patient must qualify to participate. This is determined with the help of a professional. If you have a diagnosis of eczema and there is a new eczema clinical trial coming up, you can fill out paperwork at our office and submit it to see if you quality to be a participant. A screening is done to determine eligibility, and an informed consent document is reviewed and signed prior to starting the clinical trial.

After you have been determined to be a viable candidate for a clinical trial, a complete medical assessment is completed. This may include physical examinations and diagnostic testing. This provides a baseline for the participant prior to starting.

Once you are cleared to participate and have undergone your evaluations, you will be educated on the medication that is given to you. Some patients receive the actual medication or treatment, while others might receive a placebo. Patients will need to check in with the office on a regular basis for assessments and to monitor their condition to determine the efficacy of the medication or treatment they are testing.
